Annual Networking/Social Meeting
and “Gold Elephant Book Exchange”

Meeting Goals:
 – Connect: get to know one another better – personally & professionally
  – Learn: share knowledge informally during the book exchange
  – Enjoy: fellowship + creative responses (and humor) of the game

Please bring a gift-wrapped book that is meaningful to you — perhaps a book from your own library to ‘pay it forward’ or one from a second hand bookstore. Don’t spend a lot of money – it’s the thought that counts!

The game will be similar to a traditional white elephant gift exchange — each person in turn will unwrap a book or ‘steal’ one that someone else has already opened. Unlike ‘white elephants’ (which are often useless), the books are ‘gold elephants’ that will contain some unique nuggets of wisdom when opened (or stolen) by the right recipient! Discovering those golden nuggets will be part of the game as people talk about the books they give (and the ones they get)!

  • What information do you need to know in order to stay current?
  • What is a strategic issue that you would like to learn more about?
  • What is a major challenge that you are facing in your work?
  • What is a new program idea that you would like our chapter to try?
  • What topic would help you succeed in your work?
  • Do you know any great speakers that may be available?

We have been blessed with interesting and informative monthly programs during 2017!  Let’s make our 2019 programs even better!  Bring your ideas, energy and a spirit of collaboration!  Consume copious amounts of pizza and non-alcoholic beverages!  Network with your professional colleagues!  Learn more about what’s going on in our profession!  Learn several facilitation methods and techniques!

Workspace Design that Fosters Innovation

The simple problems, solvable by a few, have been solved.  Today’s problems require teams of people to address them.  Effectively creating new ideas to solve the current and future issues yields innovation!

People create these ideas by working in collaboration.  This happens best when people run into each other and spark brilliant conversations, resulting in innovative solutions.  BUT — do our workspaces foster or stifle the collaboration and innovation that we seek?

The Toyota North American Headquarters (TMNA) is now in North Texas, along with sibling organizations such as Toyota Connected (TC) — our host for this evening.  We will first tour the space at Toyota Connected and then take a virtual tour of the TMNA space to experience the two design approaches.

We’ll give a brief overview of workspace design principles and discuss the designs of the TMNA and TC workspaces.  We hope this will provide rich insights on how you might enhance your workspaces to foster conversations and collaboration.

Please join us on September 13 for this interesting tour and discussion!

Enhancing Organizational Development through Collaboration

As you start your next OD project, what does SUCCESS look like?  How about a fully-assembled 300 piece “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” puzzle?  Please join us as we have a spirited interactive discussion to see how a puzzle metaphor can aid us in designing a collaboration approach that is effective, efficient, and aligned with the goals of your organization.

Why is this important?  It seems that most organizations today have a multi-faceted vision/mission, and each part of the organization contributes to every facet of the mission.  The vision is much like the picture on the outside of the puzzle box while the strategic objectives are like the puzzle pieces.  Differing views of the picture along with multiple teams handling each puzzle piece creates some big alignment challenges!

In this meeting we will introduce a Team Collaboration model that fosters role clarity, accountability, and alignment of vision and objectives across the people, processes, and technologies to ensure a common language of collaboration.  Two insightful quotes:

“The best teamwork comes from … working independently toward one goal in unison.”     James Cash (JC) Penney

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”     Henry Ford

We look forward to seeing you on August 9 for this timely discussion!

AI = Appreciative Inquiry = Authentic Intelligence

What do you appreciate? We are not thinking about sex, drugs, or rock and roll. We are emphasizing the impact of appreciation. Outcomes not deemed possible are achieved when AI is used.

Positive change can occur at the speed of imagination when attention is given to uncovering and nourishing what gives “life” to living systems when they are most alive, creative, and effective.  Appreciative Inquiry focuses attention on what is working at its best. AI builds on successes and strengths but does not ignore obstacles and barriers.

We will simplify and bring alive the elements of AI that you can use regardless of your role as a change agent, manager, or OD practitioner. We appreciate you joining us!

Einstein is correct, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it. We must learn to see the world anew.” Come see your world anew!

Diversity Out of the Box

Diversity is a buzz word that is floating around many offices today. Inclusion takes diversity a step forward to create cohesion within a diverse workforce. Most organizations want more diversity and better inclusion, and there are many ways to achieve it. A key point is the unique perspectives that diversity brings can encompass internal traits as well as external traits.

The current focus on diversity is not only due to the positive outcomes they can create for an office but also due to today’s modern business climate. Looking at organizations around us and the unique ways they are increasing the diversity in their workforce and the inclusion of many employees, can bring us a different focal point to take back to our own organizations.

Join us on this summer evening and explore some new perspectives on Diversity & Inclusion!

The Science of Decision Making: Anatomy of a Vision
How you contribute to your successes and failures

We all have good ideas that offer great value, however implementing them is often challenging.  But why?  What’s the disconnect between the vision for our life and our ability to deliver success?  Are some things destined to succeed and others to fail?

Using a scientific approach to the principles surrounding success and failure we will show some surprising answers. The research took a biological view of the decision-making process resulting in a methodology of self discovery.  Scientific data supports the fact that our anatomy has inherent biological drivers and it shows that these can have a dramatic bearing on our decision-making process and the success or failure of our initiatives.

How does this data have value for you?

The scientific principles of the human-behavioral matrix and its innate relationship to resistance should provide insight for you as it has for many corporate leaders.  This is illustrated in a methodology of self-discovery that has allowed many leaders to observe how they are contributing to their success or failures.

Join us on Thursday 5/10 to receive a tool that will help you identify ways you contribute to your own successes and failures.

Ms. Griggs is an Executive Coach utilizing a client driven method of self-discovery for core issues in thought processes that limit growth and prevent stable change.  The methodology utilizes system thinking and a shaman quality to offer an in-depth examination of thoughts and behaviors (archetypes) that block success.  The goal is congruence in thoughts and actions that bring healing and health to individuals and foster ethics in business.

She uses her ability to discern innate talents and potential limitations that inhibit success along with a holistic approach to issues of resistance to reduce limiting factors that interfere with stable change.  She assists clients in identifying the “soul” elements of each decision to build power, confidence, self-discovery and decision-making savvy.

Joy Griggs holds an MS in Psychology and Counseling, BS in Education, and post graduate courses from Harvard University.  Her professional background in diverse industries includes more than ten years’ experience working with corporations during restructuring efforts.  As a key member of Corporate Change Management/Transition Teams, she utilizes “whole-systems thinking” to maximize business performance while minimizing the trauma associated with growth and change.

Next Gen OD: How OD Must Adapt
to the Tsunami of Workplace Change

Every day, 10,000 Baby Boomers retire. Gen Y or Millennials now make up the largest generation in the workplace. As a workplace phenomenon, the day of the Baby Boomer is now rapidly closing. Organizations are right in the middle of a generational tsunami of change they don’t even recognize is upon them, and totally unprepared to deal with.

How will organizations cope with these changes? What will organizations look like in the future? How will they be structured? What type of culture will be the most successful? What type of employees will excel? Who will be formal leaders?

As a result of massive fundamental workplace changes, the field and practice of organizational development must change too. Now is the time for the OD field to transform itself, so it will remain a relevant change agent in organizational life.

Be sure you attend April’s DFW OD Network event, where you will experience a highly interactive presentation on how organizations are changing and how the field of OD must change right along with it.

At this presentation you will learn about major demographic, technical, and societal changes that will bend organizations into a shape never seen before. You will be part of a lively conversation about what the field of OD must do in order to be relevant and remain a major player.

Finally, experience the “thrill” of three generations co-facilitating this critical OD message!

Bob Johansen, in his latest book The New Leadership Literacies: Thriving in a Future of Extreme Disruption and Distributed Everything, says:  “…the VUCA world will be exhausting for everyone – but especially for leaders. You will have to be extremely fit, physically, and psychologically – much more so than leaders in the past.”

This evening is an opportunity for you to create your own plan to move toward having the internal resources to excel in the upcoming VUCA world.

Organizations & OD of the Future:
Where Today?  Where Tomorrow?  Am I ready?

We live in a VUCA (Volatile – Uncertain – Complex – Ambiguous) organizational world that is confusing and in constant flux. Bob Johansen (“The New Leadership Literacies” – Barrett-Koehler 2017) tells us that we need to look 10 years into the future to gain “foresight.” That foresight will give us “insight” about today which we can use to determine “actions” to take in 2018.

Join us for a mind twisting look at organizations 10 years from now and how we as leaders and consultants will need to change in order to succeed in the world of “shape-shifting organizations,” “fluid, temporary hierarchies,” “distributed everything,” “extreme dilemmas,” and “constant disruption!”

By the way, the field of Organization Development is a little bit fuzzy. What is inside the OD boundaries and what is out? We will address that topic through a brief discussion of the future oriented “Global OD Practice Framework” being developed by the OD Network  (http://www.odnetwork.org/general/custom.asp?page=globalframework). We will also assess ourselves against the Framework so that we can identify personal opportunities for self-development and contribution in 2018. Our colleague Glen Earl has been working on the team developing that Framework and will provide color commentary and insight on it.

If you work hard and focus you can walk out with a beginning outline for a “Personal Development & Contribution Plan” for 2018.  Please join us on 1/11 for what should be a great kickoff for the new year!
