Annual Networking/Social Meeting
and “Gold Elephant Book Exchange”

Meeting Goals:
Connect: get to know one another better – personally & professionally
Learn: share knowledge informally during the book exchange
Enjoy: fellowship + creative responses (and humor) of the game

Please bring a gift-wrapped book that is meaningful to you — perhaps a book from your own library to ‘pay it forward’ or one from a second hand bookstore. Don’t spend a lot of money – it’s the thought that counts!

The game will be similar to a traditional white elephant gift exchange — each person in turn will unwrap a book or ‘steal’ one that someone else has already opened. Unlike ‘white elephants’ (which are often useless), the books are ‘gold elephants’ that will contain some unique nuggets of wisdom when opened (or stolen) by the right recipient! Discovering those golden nuggets will be part of the game as people talk about the books they give (and the ones they get)!

Member needs and interests drive DFW OD Network programs.  Accordingly, our November Meeting is a facilitated event designed to answer the question: “What programs do our members most want for our 2016 DFW OD Network Monthly Meetings?”

Everyone will be able to recommend their ideas and help choose the topics for our 2016 programs.  What topics are most important, meaningful and relevant for you?  Here are some questions to stimulate your thinking:

  • What topic in the OD field are you most interested in?
  • What information do you need to know in order to stay current?
  • What is a strategic issue that you would like to learn more about?
  • What is a major challenge that you are facing in your work?
  • What is a new program idea that you would like our chapter to try?
  • What topic would help you succeed in your work?

We have been blessed with interesting and informative monthly programs during 2015!  Let’s make our 2016 programs even better!  Bring your ideas, energy and a spirit of collaboration!  Consume copious amounts of pizza and non-alcoholic beverages!  Network with your professional colleagues!  Learn more about what’s going on in our profession!  Learn several facilitation methods and techniques!

Logan Renfrow is a global corporate development professional with strong entrepreneurial leadership skills and the proven ability to develop and apply strategic insight. He spent five years in China and Singapore successfully managing organizational change and growth initiatives for an international manufacturer of electrical power systems for the shipbuilding and oil and gas industries. Logan received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University and will graduate in December with his master’s degree in Organizational Leadership at Gonzaga University.

With the surge in content marketing, it’s a daunting task to stay current and relevant in any field, particularly one as dynamic as Organizational Development. The blessing and the curse of the Internet has been the ready availability of large volumes of information which are constantly expanding and being updated.

Speaker Bio:   Daryl Thomas is a long-time training and development professional who uses technology to enhance personal productivity and professional leadership. The intersection of People, Process, and Technology is a space that has intrigued Daryl for many years. Through his work for companies large (FedEx, Citicorp, Well Fargo) and small (Aloha Technologies, Elagent, Thomas Associates), he has been designing strategies and building teams that look for the right relationship between these three key areas.

Throughout his career, Daryl has worked in and with sales, customer service, technical support and IT.  For the last 20 years, he has primarily worked within Human Resources (Talent Management, Learning and Development). Currently his team is responsible for the design, development, administration, and evaluation of learning for leaders and sales professionals.  Daryl spends his spare time reading, researching, and writing — usually in the areas of leadership, productivity, and technology.

A Living Case Study in the Perils & Rewards of Innovation

OD professionals facilitate change, and innovation is one of the arrows in our quiver. In this session, Maureen Clemmons will recount her journey into developing a pragmatic theory that ancient Egyptians harnessed the wind to build their monuments.

Told from the perspective from someone who actually teaches innovation, Dr. Clemmons shares her story of taking an idea from inception, into the field where she demonstrated her theory, and finally into the history books. Her story is one of failure, success, perseverance and unrelenting determination. What makes this session so interesting is that it is framed from the perspective of a practitioner who understands the academic models of change.

Speaker Bio:   Dr. Maureen Clemmons holds both an Ed.D in Organization Change and an Executive MBA from Pepperdine University. She is the president of Transformations, a consulting practice located in Winnetka, California whose associates specialize in Innovation, Change Management and Entrepreneurship. Her clients include Interorbital Space Systems, Taberco Inc, US Biofuels, The Traveling Space Museum, and others. She has lectured at dozens of these institutions and in many colleges, universities, and centers of innovation.

Her documentary “Flying Pyramids, Soaring Stones” airs internationally on the History Channel, profiling her theory and research demonstrating the ancient Egyptians could have harnessed the wind to build their monuments. Her book “Soaring Stones” is currently available on Amazon.com in paperback and electronic versions.

Accolades include:  Leader of National Geographic Society Expedition EC-Y02 and Fellow of the Explorer’s Club, Wings World Quest and National University. In addition, she was honored to carry Wings World Quest Expedition Flag #11 and Expedition Flag #22.

A side note:  We would like to thank Dr. Ed Savage for facilitating this meeting and introducing us to Dr. Clemmons. Ed is a highly experienced OD/OC professional who met Maureen while they were studying Organization Change at Pepperdine University, and is a personal witness to her journey. Opening Up Your Silos

Got silos in your organization?  Most people would say: ‘Why yes we do! And we need to bring out the big guns and break them down before they suck the life out of our company!’   Well not so fast cowboy — are silos always bad?  And when they are, do they need to be busted wide open?  Or do they just need to be ‘ventilated’ to keep people fresh and stimulate the flow of ideas?

In this session Pete and Jim will explore these questions and show us a new way to look at organizational silos using the metaphor of “fracking” – a common practice in the oil & gas industry that is not well understood.  Of course you can also expect a couple of stories (i.e. case studies) to illustrate these ideas, and perhaps a few examples from the audience as well.

So come to the July meeting and let us ‘frack’ your paradigm on ‘silos’!

Peter Jay Sorenson is an independent strategic organization design and change management consultant, coach, social entrepreneur, university instructor, and ethicist.

Pete’s recent focus has been on using innovation to create economic and social self-reliance for individuals, families, and organizations in both the developing and developed world. His current clients are mainly from the healthcare and oil and gas sectors.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington (1976) and his Master’s Degree in Organizational Behavior from Brigham Young University (1979). The Institute of Management Consultants awarded Pete the Certified Management Consultant® (CMC®) designation in 2002.

In August 2013 Pete was given the prestigious “Sharing the Wealth Award” by the OD Network.  This fall, his new book “Organizing! Deliberate Design” will be published.

Jim Jameson is a Principal at Noah Consulting LLC, a firm specializing in Master Data Management for the Upstream Oil & Gas industry. Updating the UT Southwestern Story

At our June meeting you have the unique opportunity to get the inside view of an active large-scale change initiative in one of the most dynamic, growing, and busy industries around.

Ben Dilla is the Assistant Director of Organizational Development at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He will speak to the progress the UT Southwestern team has made on moving this medical organization from St. Paul Hospital to Clements University Hospital in December 2014, and how things have been going since.

Ben first spoke to the DFW OD Network 18 months ago about this initiative, giving us an intriguing preview of the size, scope, and plans underway for this move. Come and hear his update on the challenges they have addressed and how it’s working today.

And don’t forget, at the same time UT Southwestern Medical Center is dealing with this move it is also adapting to a sea change in its business environment resulting from new legislation and other ‘external’ influences. (And you thought your organization was experiencing big changes!)

Speaker Bio:  Ben Dilla

Ben is Assistant Director of Organizational Development at UT Southwestern Medical Center.  He has over 30 years of experience in OD as a behavioral scientist (internal OD consultant) for the US Air Force, external consultant for PDI Ninth House (now Korn Ferry), and as manager of Training & Development teams for several local organizations. He earned his MS and PhD in Industrial & Organizational Psychology from Purdue University.

Ben currently leads a team of four OD consultants engaged in executive coaching, team building, organizational design, and change management to support and enhance UTSW’s three-fold mission of education, research, and patient care.

Emotional Intelligence (sometimes referred to as Emotional Quotient) requires little introduction now that it is considered a critical success factor in a career and organization, along with decision-making, leadership, creativity & innovation, teambuilding, and communication – just to name a few. But just because Emotional Intelligence is commonly known doesn’t mean it is commonly practiced to improve personal and professional lives.

In this session, we will take a look at Emotional Intelligence through an amusing story, “Don’t Kick the Dog”. This story, about 4 kids and a dog named Precious, will set the frame for a lively and highly interactive evening of learning. You will have some of your most “burning” questions answered by Panelists who are in the know, and finally — how about a round of “Emotional Intelligence Jeopardy”.

Holistic Wellness Programs in OD and
How They Affect Employee Engagement 

Are These Programs Worth Money, Time, and Effort? 

The February 4 edition of Gallup Business Journal posed this question: “When you examine your company’s current investment in wellness, does it focus on health and wellness alone, or does it encompass the other key elements that influence how your employees experience their lives?”

Gallup goes on to describe key elements of people’s lives that companies should focus on to “improve the bottom line”.  With Gallup on board with Wellbeing, should more companies and organizations consider the whole person when determining ways to improve their bottom line?

This presentation and discussion will dive into this question along with where work has been, where it is now and where it is going.  We will also take a look at what local companies are doing in Holistic Wellness, and perhaps inspire a more holistic approach to employee engagement.

Speaker Bio:  Shane Simpson, Teacher/Coach/Advocate

Shane Simpson moved to the Dallas area four years ago to explore the field of holistic wellness and has found a common denominator in the field of Organizational Development.  When he started his career in public education as a science teacher and high school boy’s basketball coach, he began reading books on personal and organizational improvement to improve his craft, and has since read over 120 books in the context of leadership and holistic wellness.

After teaching, Shane worked in city government heading a recreation center where he discovered his passion for helping people live more fulfilling lives by looking at their life through a holistic lens. He has completed courses in Dave Ramsey’s Financial Coaching, Mindfulness practice, leadership programs, and Change Management.

He has held a variety of appointed and volunteer positions as chairman of a county health coalition, Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, grant writer for a county farmer’s market, and project manager of a wellness festival.  Shane currently works at UT Southwestern and serves on his department’s Employee Advisory Council.

EnterUP “Accelerates Human Innovation” through a blend of Coaching, Consulting and Training.  We utilize a unique technique that extrapolates behavioral and perceptual patterns to create new internal alignment with future success.
   
Ginger brings over 20 years of experience working with technology consulting, training, selling and coaching organizations from selection, through adoption, during implementation and overseeing the training phase. Ginger’s clients have included Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies, although most of her clients ranged from 20 employees to 3,000 employees.
   
Ginger has completed four ICF accredited coach training programs. She also continues training, educating and developing herself on ways to enhance human behavior by maintaining a front-line position on neuroscience and brain based theories.
   
Ginger now serves on the Board of Dress for Success and is Director for the Professional Women’s Group. Also she was a Dallas CASA court appointed advocate for two years.

Using An Evidence Approach

What is an “Evidence Approach” to building a leadership development program? How does it work, how do you do it, and what are the results? In this discussion you will learn what it is, how it was used to develop such a program, and finally what were the results.

As the Program Manager for such an effort in a Fortune 250 organization, Ed Savage will share an in depth look at the methodology and its use to design, develop, deliver, and enhance an executive leadership development program in a 45,000 employee multi-business unit company. The evidence based principles discussed and used can be applied to large and small organizations.
