What is “Organization Development”?
The term Organization Development was defined by Richard Beckhard as “an effort (1) planned, (2) organization-wide, and (3) managed from the top, to (4) increase organization effectiveness and health through (5) planned interventions in the organization’s ‘processes,’ using behavioral-science knowledge.”
Richard Beckhard’s 1969 Organization Development: Strategies and Models
More recently, the field has evolved to include planned interventions that may not always be led from the top or organization-wide. However, the focus remains on increasing an organization’s effectiveness in the face of rapidly changing customer demands, labor markets, technology, regulation, and competitive forces.
